The Dichotomy of London: My First Impressions of the City

Image
Arriving in London began an entertaining and tiring adventure. In the first 48 hours my first impression of London is that it is a city of dichotomies. Between the old and new, traditional and untraditional, wealthy and impoverished. Quite unlike any city you might find in the USA. Admittedly, the first day was pretty rough. We all had jet lag and just wanted to eat and sleep but it was a very good thing that we didn’t as we would have thrown off our sleep schedules for the entire week.  It began at the airport. After getting off the plane I began to notice the differences in quality expectations in the city. The bathrooms were nicer, the hallways were cleaners, and the employees had a totally different standard for polite service. In contrast restaurant service is fast, to the point, and no questions asked. Probably the easiest opposition to notice is the contrast between the old and new architecture in the city. It is important to note that many buildings in the city are at ...

London in Two Days!!!

Holy crap guys! My class leaves for London in two days and I'm already exhausted just thinking about it! Going into this blog I wanted to offer you all an excited and upbeat explanation of what I am expecting to get out of going to London, but that just wouldn't be real. Because right now, i'm tired, frustrated and pretty stressed out. Now, those negative emotions are not all stemming from this trip but they are currently effecting my outlook on it and my expectations. I think everyone has been in this situation when they are about to go on a vacation, business trip, or study abroad. It can be very stressful planning, packing and going with the flow, especially if your like me and want to be in control of the entire process. So today, I'm gonna keep it real, and walk us all through how I handle being the little ball of stress that I am by sharing the way I find the things I am excited about for any given trip, specifically this London trip, in order to put myself in a...

Technicolor Skys

Image
You can't tell a whole lot about that day from the picture. You can't see the endless green grass on rolling anthills that stretched farther than geographically possible. Nor the pale, pale blue sky stretched even farther than the grass or the high-noon sun that just barely blocked out those formless technicolor flying creatures set loose by giddy caretakers. All there is, is half my face, mouth open wide, tongue stuck out, smiling. I was probably laughing as I ran, my crimson fleece jacket contrasting vividly with the patch of grass behind me as my hair flew wildly in the blustery winds. It wasn't until I was fifteen that my Dad (far left) and I drove past that park again. It looked nothing like I remembered it. I couldn't have been older than four or five the day we went to the park. It had been early fall and the leaves had just barely started to change. I wouldn't have noticed it, but my Mom(far left) and Aunt (far right) had been talking about returning to ta...

Snickerdoodles?

Image
What is your favorite cookie? Chocolate chip? Oreos? All of them? Mine happen to be gingerbread. But if you like sweets, especially cookies, it may seem impossible to try something new. Now, I've had snickerdoodles before. I would occasionally grab one while waiting in line at the cafeteria. Our high school cafeteria was tiny, half of a basement, and the line for food looped around stairs to the main floor and could stretch all the way to the classroom halls. My favorite lunch was on Wednesdays, chicken parmesan sandwich with either a brownie or snickerdoodle cookie and usually a bottle of water. Simple, but good fuel. But, in all my time baking and eating baked goods I have never made my own snickerdoodles and eaten them fresh out of the oven. So today, while it snowed, thats what I did. I ended up using my apartment-mate's recipe. After years of trial and error my apartment-mate and her mother settled on this particular one, which they now use every Christmas. We ...

Introduction

Image
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! My name is Bailey and I welcome you to accompany me on my journeys as a new blogger. First off, I think I should start by making a proper introduction to myself and the title of my blog. As I begin this blog I also begin my first semester as an academic junior English Major, despite it being the second half go my third year in college. Now, this didn't occur because I failed or took a semester off. In actuality started my academic carrier as a Culinary Major. I have always loved food and have seen it as the bridge between people and the facilitator of new experiences. Because of this passion I decided to make it my profession. Now, you're probably asking yourself "Then why is her blog title "The Traveling Adventures of an EX -Culinary Major"?" While I still love food and cooking I now know that trying to make money at it is way more stressful than I expected and if I stuck with it I would end up hating food. Which i...
